What to do Memorial Day Weekend 2021 in Asheville
Posted by: Asheville BBA
Here in Asheville, Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff event for summer. This year, Memorial Day weekend occurs from Friday May 28th to Monday, May 31st. The warm weather is an invitation to head outdoors and have some fun. Whether you’re soaking up the sun or rocking out at a concert, remember to stop and take a moment to honor the memory of the men and women who died serving in the United States military.
Conquer the Great Outdoors
Now that it’s finally warm enough to go outside, consider spending a day exploring nature. Asheville can get pretty crowded during Memorial Day weekend, so try out some trails off the beaten path, or get to the trailheads early in the morning. Alternatively, book a tour with Hike, Bike, Kayak Asheville to head out on a less crowded adventure led by local experts. Another fun outdoor activity is to take a zipline tour of the area. Suitable for a wide range of ages, Navitat Canopy Adventures lets you fly through the forests of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Located less than a mile from Biltmore Village, Sweet Biscuit Inn is a delightful place to stay in Asheville. You’ll wake up hungry to the smells of gourmet breakfast wafting through their stunning 1915 Colonial Revival home.
Picnic with a View
Take a picnic on the Blue Ridge Parkway! Waterrock Knob has plenty of picnic tables in the parking lot with good views. Complete the strenuous hike to the top for killer views. Stop at Frog Level Brewing Company on your way back to Asheville to enjoy a refreshing beer by the creek.

Make a Sporty Splash
From mountain lakes to river rapids, there are so many refreshing spots to cool off in Asheville. Locals recommend hiking to swimming holes like Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls, and Skinny Dip Falls. The French Broad River, which flows through the city, offers both exciting whitewater rapids and calmer, tranquil waters. For extreme adventure, go whitewater rafting just 30 minutes northwest of Asheville with Blue Heron Whitewater. If you crave more leisurely movement, consider kayaking along the river closer to town. Bring your own boat or rent one from one of the many outdoor outfitters in town. Not so interested in exercising on your vacation? Lay out on opening day at local beaches, such as Lake Lure or Lake Powhatan.
After a day in the sun, return to your impeccably decorated room at Beaufort House. Traveling with your romantic partner? This historic pink Victorian bed & breakfast offers a romance package with flowers, Belgian chocolates, and a bouquet of flowers in the room upon arrival.
Attend an Event (No, Seriously)
If you’re anything like us, you can’t contain your excitement at the possibility of attending an event … any event. Luckily, concerts and festivals are slowly popping back up on our calendars, just in time for Memorial Day weekend. On Thursday, May 27th, Americana band Rebecca and the Reckoning is performing a lawn concert at Isis Music Hall. Soak up local art on Saturday and Sunday at the 2nd Annual Downtown Asheville Memorial Day Weekend Festival of the Arts. If Australian bluegrass sounds compelling to you, head to Isis on Saturday night to see Kristy Cox perform on the main stage. Staying in town until Monday?
