Ultimate Guide to Asheville’s Underground Beer Scene

January 29, 2021

While Asheville is known to be home to some of the biggest names in the brewing industry, it is also home to several small and quirky breweries. You’ll find colorful hangouts with unique murals, industrial-chic spaces, and tons of great beer that may just make it to the top of your favorites.

Highland Brewing Company

This family run craft brewery has been around since 1994, perfecting the art of beer making and serving up satisfied customers. Owner Oscar Wong recently won the Brewers Association Recognition Award for outstanding contributions to the industry. Given to only one brewer a year, it highlights the outstanding work Highland is doing in the brewing scene and the community. You’ll be able to spot their year-round releases from a mile away with their colorful cans depicting the surrounding mountains, but make sure to try some of their seasonal releases too.

Burial Beer Co.

Situated on the South Slope, this unique brewery wanted to focus on resurrecting old european styles of brewing and bring back flavors that were dead to most of the brewing industry.

Combining that with odd flavors, Burial Beer Co. has found a way to create new outside-the-box brews. No matter how broad or niche your tastes are, you’ll easily fall in love with something these folks are creating.

Hi-Wire Brewing

Hi-Wire is a growing name in the brewing community. Named after walking on the high wire, this brewery aims to make beers that are balanced and approachable, with a little bit of amazement mixed in. There are taprooms across North Carolina with new ones popping up in Kentucky and Tennessee, but Big Top in the Biltmore Village remains a favorite.

Carolina Bed & Breakfast is the perfect place to stay in Asheville. This romantic inn is just minutes away from downtown and makes getting around the town a breeze.

Hillman Brewery

This family-run brewery carries the names of the owners. Brad, Greig, and Brandi Hillman are the masterminds behind this Asheville gem. Their Biltmore Village taproom feels like a community spot with everyone glad to see one another and you’ll quickly find yourself rounded into the Hillman family too. The Old Fort location is great for a refreshing drink after a hike at Catawba Falls.

Asheville Pizza & Brewery

What goes great with beer? If you answered pizza then you’ll love Asheville Pizza & Brewery. Their downtown location is a wonderful spot to spend an afternoon under it’s covered outdoor seating. Grab a slice of award winning pizza, and pair it with their Ninja Porter which recently won gold from the World Beer Cup.

Green Man Brewery

The iconic Green Man can be spotted all around town and it all started at the original old garage known as Dirty Jacks. While the brewery has grown tremendously since its origin in 1997, their roots are just as important as day one. Go authentic to see how they started, nothing has changed!

Stay at Pinecrest Bed & Breakfast during your next trip to Asheville. This darling inn in the Historic Montford District is just minutes away from several of the city’s best breweries. Take an afternoon brewery crawl and explore the city.

Catawba Brewery

Located on the South Slope, this brewery has a great story of going from practically nothing to one of Asheville’s favorite breweries. Make sure to try a flight with all of their experimental releases along with some of their classics. Grab a pint and pair it with some delicious food from Buxton Hall BBQ located next door. Heaven on a bun when paired with one of Catawba’s iconic brews.
